I think many people want the prestiege of calling themselves-----midwesterm
I have read thread entitled-------'are we midwestern"---argueing that their area is in the following places--------NW Arkansa, Eastern TN, Kentucky, and even Huntsville Alabama
I think there is a lot of midwestern envy in the US.
Why should one be ashamed of being considered south or mid south?
And why is that, do ya think?
FYI, I don't think it's everyone, everywhere in said region. (Upper South)
For example, a former co-worker was born in Cairo (Kay-roh), Illinois, and raised in Springfield, Mo.
'Don't confuse us' [Southern Ill.] 'with those Po***** in Chicago.', he'd say ( of course when no Po*****s were in earshot).
So, obviously he's comfortable with his regional identity.
I started a poll this morning for Missourians on another online venue.
Out of the 80 native Missourians that have answered so far, the only ones that consider themselves Southerners are from the Bootheel area.
"I now understand from an earlier thread that some (and some not) from Missouri are desperate to be considered Midwestern, and while there are many factors that say it's a transition zone between true Midwest and Upper South, I also agree that what people think they are is also important, so for those Missourians who consider themselves Midwestern, that is fine by me.
Just don't expect many of us who are not from the 'Show Me' state to agree." (Eu)
Alpha, meet omega, as far as I'm concerned.

You have a super-duper day, yourself.
The vast majority ( area wise) of Missouri south of I-70 has no resemblance to the midwest.
Just because a Missouri poster has land in a small segment of Southern Missori where that may be an exception makes that an exception rather than the rule.
Im sorry, I must have missed the part of the thread where you stated your PhD candidacy in sociological identity.
Please direct my attention to your thesis?
Posts #69 (in part) and #72 of this thread, to be specific.

this same logic could be applied to north and south dakota i suppose, as one can clearly see that 2/3 of the state doesnt share the same agricultural traits as much of the midwest. i have no idea what its like there. but missourians (at least the ones a good 20 miles from arkansas) michiganders and minnesotans DO consider themselves midwestern, despite not really being part of the midwestern agricultural belt.
And that's all I've got to say to you.........................
