Storm Troopers? Concentration Camps? Forced Aversion Therapy? Just how are these jackboots in the Southern states interfering with gays in the states that you indict in a way that states outside the South are not?
From where I'm sitting, gays in Atlanta seem to be living their lives as openly as anywhere else in the US. That fact seems to have little to nothing to do with what some elected official might personally think of them.
In case you hadn't noticed, homophobia is not limited to a geographic area.
I completely agree with almost everything you say. However, no southern governor has the right to put people into concentration camps or forced aversion therapy, therefore this would not be within their power to exclude.

Right now, there is a suspicion on the part of gay Americans about things, particularly in the south. same with any other dare I say oppressed group, although this could happen in the north too.

With regard to these 'politicians with sinister motives', are these the same politicians that i see lining up for about a mile to march in the Gay Pride parade? In this city, if they do anything to gays, it's to pander to them for votes! The gay community has a lot of political in this town, as I suspect they do in Houston and Dallas.
Rick Perry is still our governor just as he has been since Bush became president 10 years ago.
Dallas has the largest predominately gay church in the world. How is that not "gay friendly"?
Houston has the first openly lesbian mayor in US history. How is that not "gay friendly"?
Austin is a magnet for young gays & liberals alike all across the nation because its a huge college town & plus its a state capital.
Well a gay church doesn't really prove that Dallas is gay friendly. I mean if anything it's just a reminder that Dallas is still in the bible belt, i.e a higher number of religous gay folk.
The problem from my outsider POV is that those cities are oasises in a pretty conservative and religous state.
I mean Georgia is the same way. Atlanta is very gay friendly but things change once you leave the metro area with the exception of Savannah.

Absolutely, but I would argue that Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, and Austin are gay friendly cities. However, once you get outside their metropolitan areas, its probably a lot harder.
Orange County, FL. approves anti-discrimination law for gays
This new law which prohibits discrimination against gays in areas of housing & employment passed yesterday Novemember 23, 2010 in Orange County/Orlando.
This makes Orange county the sixth county in Florida to have a Human Rights Ordinances that protect gays. The other counties are Miami-Dade, Broward (Ft.Lauderdale), Palm Beach, Pinellas (St. Petersburg), Leon (Tallahassee) & now Orange. Some of these counties also have same sex benefits for partners who work in the government sector.
How many other Southern states or counties have similar ordinances or even come close to Florida?
