I agree with those who say that we need to control the demand side of the equation. We certainly don't control the supply side. While there is growing demand in emerging countries that we cannot control, our best bet for influencing/mitigating the price of gas is to consume less. This can be done by reevaluating the types of cars we drive and by how we develop our communities. If we can both significantly increase our efficiency and reduce the amount of miles we drive per year, $5 a gallon wouldn't be a huge financial burden. Even with $2 gas, someone driving a giant SUV would probably spend more on gas per year than someone driving a fuel efficient hybrid or clean-diesel small vehicle at $5 a gallon.

The big difference I see in vehicles is the the 4 door pickup, while large SUVs may be dinosaurs, the 4 door pickup is everywhere. The F150 is one of the best selling vehicles in the U.S always has been, but more families are choosing large pickups verses SUVs, not verses hybrid cars. Personally I'm 6'2", my 11 year old is 5'4", he can't sit behind me in a Prius or any other small car for that matter. Again, my 9 year old is 5'1" and he can squish his knees into my chair for a short ride but not a 25 to 100 mile trip.
As people we are bigger than we were in the '80s, cars need to reflect this.
Public transportation in Florida sucks, it's the worst and the wages are peanuts.
I only make $7.25 part time with COLLEGE education and gas in this hell hole is $3.15 I cannot get anything better in this tourist based state and I don't have money to leave... How I'm supposed to pay for gas, I'll have to work a week and a half to fuel my Kia Spectra, my job is 45 minutes away in rush hour .
