FWIW, Southern cities and counties by and large (a few examples withstanding such as Forsyth County) have always been integrated and never had the situation this thread proposes. The real problem was the race based caste system enshrined in law that said:

-black people can live in this town...but only here and here but not there
-black people can eat at this restaurant...but only in the back
-black people can ride a bus or trolley...but had to move if they had a good seat
-no marriage or copulation between whites and blacks (well, at least officially)

And a myriad of other demeaning laws meant not to separate out white people and black people by location, but to separate out white people and black people by importance. That importance being, in their ignorant world view, white people were "higher beings" and black people "lower beings".

But even during all of this (as well as during the murderous period when those who dared to not obey those laws were killed), black and white people always lived in close proximity to each other in the South.

One very peculiar custom from that time was how black and white children would be allowed to play with each other, then as they came closer to school age (or their teen years) were forbidden to interact.

But that's all in the past now thankfully. The only thing left now are the morons living on the fringe of society. Good thing no one cares about them anyway.

well, if you read the first few lines after you click on the link, it says the author asked a clerk in a convenient store if the name ANNA indeed meant what it was known for, and she confirmed it. That happened in 2001.

Reading the thread title, this was my first thought, too.

When I read the post, though, I have to say I have heard of this before, or at least that saying. However, I do not know of any places in Tennessee that specifically had them (I'm sure there were some). There are places with tiny black populations (mainly in the plateau and mountains), but per some of the links, I don't think there is any city in Tennessee with a population over a couple hundred that is 100% white.

"As recently as the 1970s, elite suburbs like Edina, Minnesota, would
openly turn away Jewish and black would-be home buyers." -- from the article

Wow! You have got to be kidding me. Truly shocking.
