I'm looking for a very accessible ski resort. I'd love somewhere I can walk to the slopes from where I live. Does anywhere like this exist?

I've heard that some resorts have lifts/gondolas from town to get you up to the main slopes, but haven't had any luck finding such places.

All I really care about is the mountain. I want to be up there as much as possible, hopefully everyday. I'm an artist and freelance illustrator (online correspondence) so I don't necessarily need somewhere flush with jobs, although it would be nice to have opportunities, since my chosen career is often spotty and up-and-down.

Of course costs are always an issue. I assume anywhere within walking distance of a resort would be quite expensive, but of course if there are multiple suitable places I would prefer the one with the lower cost of living.

You might check out Stowe, VT. It's not horrifically expensive and pretty walkable. Nearby Burlington, VT has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country (4.5%).

Maybe Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake or Lake Placid in NY. Old Forge might be another community to consider.

Summit county, Colorado. Summit county includes Keystone, Copper, Breckenridge, A-basin and Loveland. Summit County has free public transportation from all the ski resorts and around all the ski towns. Downside it is expensive. Upside the area is mobbed all winter long and the Lake Dillon area is nice in summer. Another option is Telluride Colorado that does have a gondola right from town and some of the best skiing in the world imo. Downside even more expensive. Tom Cruise/Oprah Winfrey expensive.
