I think that Chicago and New York win this one hands down followed closely by Los Angeles. If you ask me, merging I-90 and I-94 together was the absolute worst idea imaginable to mankind in Chicago. I-90 really needs more traffic relief on it through downtown. The thing with St. Louis is that once I-70 is relocated north of the Poplar Street Bridge and I-64 is redone in Missouri, congestion should essentially not be a problem. St. Louis essentially had traffic relief in mind when it began designing its interstate highway system. Interstate 270 provides relief for I-70, I-255 provides relief for I-55, and once complete from I-270 to I-64 in St. Charles, Missouri State Highway 364 (future Interstate 364) will provide relief for I-64 over the Missouri River, and Missouri State Highway 370 (I consider it Interstate 370) provides further relief for I-70 over the Missouri River. I'm really surprised that most cities don't have bypass routes for through traffic through their other cities. then again, I guess St. Louis is big enough that it doesn't need traffic to go downtown to promote its growth. Chicago and New York really need bypass routes which are as short as their two-digit interstates or shorter...few cities besides St. Louis ingeniously designed them. Few cities I think can claim to have a better-designed highway system than St. Louis (the Poplar Street Bridge is not going to be a problem for much longer...in 3 years or so the new I-70 bridge should be built, and there will be a new route connecting I-64 where it meets I-55/70 now slightly northwest to the realigned I-70.)
detroit metro area is pretty bad, the suburbs have bad traffic problems.
Detroit doesn't even TOUCH NYC, L.A., D.C. when it comes to traffic problems! Detroit is on par with other cities of its' size such as Phoenix and Riverside but definetly not the ones on this poll.
My vote goes for Chicago. In my 30 years in the area, living in the western burbs, the shortest amount of time its taken me to go 30 miles to Chicago was 45 minutes. The worst? 2.5 hours. Ive been caught up in traffic jams on LSD at 1 am before! Taking me 45 minutes to get from the Soldier Field area to Congress. Total nightmare!
Not on the list - but Atlanta has been consistently the worst for me whenever I have had the displeasure to drive through there.
Chicago seems to have more construction though. and that 80/94 IN to IL is a total nightmare.

are you kidding me! to go from a detroit suburb to downtown detroit takes about 50 minitues when the suburb you're in is twelve miles away. I went through gary indiana to chicago and I had no traffic problems, I went straight to midway and got aboard the EL train. DC also, I didn't have problems. NYC I came from providence and went straight to Manhattan. there where no hour waits the most I had where little stops here and there. now, Providence and the rest of new england is a disaster. you'll be trying to go twenty miles, and be in traffic for hours!
Boston and NYC area (North Jersey) doesnt even crack the top 10.
