What are some stores you usually only see in cities of 50,000 population or 150,000 population within 20 minutes?

My thoughts:

Costco
Best Buy
Borders
Barnes N Nobles
Macy's
Olive Garden
Chili's
PetSmart
Old Navy
World Market
Abercrombie and Fitch
Panera Bread
Chipotle

I would say most of these are found in just about any suburb in the country or at least within 10 to 20 minutes of anywhere within them, I dont see many of these in the actual cities; or at least the larger box stores like costo, world market etc. Some exist in both the burbs and cities like Barnes and Noble or an Old Navy

If you mean city as in urban areas than yeah you usually only see Barnes N Nobles and Old Navy in urban areas. Otherwise you will only see the boxy stores in boxy parts of small cities and towns.

In California, usually cities and towns under 50,000 population or 150,000 population not within 20 minutes you don't see alot of the stores I mention.

When I see "city" I think metro. Trader Joe's, Cheesecake factory, Whole Foods, Ikea, Saks Fifth Ave, Tiffany & Co, Nordstram, Planet Hollywood.

We have all of those in the area. We're down to 1 Borders, though.

Olive Gardens are all over the place. Lots of towns (outside of major metros) with 30-40,000 people have them. Same with Chili's. You can find a lot of those stores in "smaller" cities that have a lot of commercial, or are geared towards tourists or interstate traffic.

We don't have an IKEA or Saks. We used to have Planet Hollywood, but it closed. Nordstrom is currently under construction and should open later this year.

We have all of those except Chipotle (not in our area), Borders (there was an outlet), and Macy's (are in every market surrounding us, though).

In our market of almost 700,000, there's only one Olive Garden, Costco and Abercrombie and Fitch, and two Carrabba's. The Olive Garden (in North Charleston), often has 1-2 hour waits on weekend nights.

Ikea is only in the major cities, usually right off of an interstate to get the most travelers. Our closest one is in Charlotte, University City, or in Atlanta.

Five Guys is everywhere too. We have four within 30 minutes of me. There's only one Whole Foods in our area, in Mt. Pleasant; always crowded. Trader Joe's is just opening in a couple months.

California Pizza Kitchen is a great example. They are nowhere near here. The closest are in Atlanta and Charlotte.

Saks Fifth closed just last year; Tiffany and Co. is in Charlotte, along with Cheesecake Factory and Nordstrom. That is the retail hub of the Carolinas along with the Raleigh/Durham area.

I heard that Macy's won't put a store in a market that's smaller than a half million (metro area).

In a market of 50,000-150,000, I think (sadly) that the only places a city can really count on are McDonald's and Walmart.
