Im a European and I have thought about buying a vacation house somewhere in the U.S., in order to live there a couple of months each year. I think that the most interesting would be in a big city with at least one million people, but where the real estate prices are low, and the public transportation is fairly good. It must also be within a fair distance from a large international airport with departures to Europe.
A price range from $50.000 to $100.000 is what I can affort, but I obviously dont want a house in bad condition, or in a bad neighborhood with a high crime rate and lots of scumbags/drugdealers. All rational suggestions would be appreciated.

Sad to say, 50K to 100K will not get you anything in the type of city that youre looking for. That type of price range will net you something utterly horrible here in Chicago, and likewise in other areas. For that type of price, youd be stuck way out in some small town somewhere.

You'll NEVER find a house in good condition for less than $150K in ANY big US city even inexpensive ones like Dallas, Houston, or Denver. The only places that you'd even have a remote chance of finding an inexpensive house like that would be in some small town in the midwest that is basically close to no big city.
You can get a house for that price in cities in the US but there usaully not the best houses in the world.Im not saying the house is going to be terrible, but probably not in a good neighborhood.
ditto the above; you won't find housing under $100,000 in any major city unless it is the worst of the slums.
Being that you will be flying back and forth from Europe, you probably would want to stay on the east coast, which will save you both time in a plane and money spent on airfare.
Affordable housing anywhere near your price range is basically not available between New York City and Washington, D.C. If you continue to save up, you may be able to afford something near Boston, Atlanta, or Tampa. I think Atlanta would be your best bet.
Alot of starter homes in the US go for 180,000-200,000 dollars now.You may be able to get a nice 2 bedroom apartment. In fact I know you could. But you can't get a nice house in a nice neighborhood for 50,000-100,000.They actually do have nice houses in the bad areas but as you siad you don't want to be in a bad neighborhood. And anyway you'd be surrounded by vacant homes and badly kept homes too in a high crime area.
oy mate!
I would suggest Uniontown, Pennsylvania..at least in that Fayette county vicinity. Fresh water lakes abound to the south in West Virginia. Snow skiing is just minutes away at Wisp Ski resort in Maryland. Great golf exists at Memacolin Woodlands and Lake View Country Club. The Pittsburgh International Airport is about 1 hours drive. Something could be bought with small acerage for $100k. Pennsylvania taxes are friendly too. What you are seeking is here...a good realtor from Fayette County should be contacted...good luck...and although we have no Rugby League here...Rugby does exist...as hill folk we follow gridiron and the Gold and Blue of WVU...

I saw on Realtors homesite that houseprices in the Chicago area starts at only $30.000 (obviously shag-like houses that most of all needs a bulldozer). However, for $60 to 100.000 I managed to find several houses that looked good and was described as being in good condition, but I dont know about the neighborhoods though. Is it perhaps possible to make a good bargin on real estate auctions?
Chicago both have a large airport and rather good public transport, if Im not mistaken.

There are plenty of nice cheap houses for sale in something called Fulton county - Atlanta. Does anyone know if thats a bad area with a high crime rate?
Theres bad areas with high crime in Fulton county and in the city of Atlanta, but Im not sure what they are.Don't live on the Southside or College Park thats all I know for high crime areas in ATL.
