Currently living in Baton Rouge, LA (temporarily... just for 8 months).
Likes:
- Fantastic weather in Autumn, Winter, and Spring!
- Pretty good nightlife scene and lots of restaurants.
- Great walking/biking paths around the lakes near LSU.
- LSU campus and the passionate football fan culture.
- Whole Foods
Dislikes:
- Summers are too hot and humid.
- The industrial areas on the North side of the city are scare me for health-reasons.
- There is quite a lot of crime in some neighborhoods.
- Roaches!
- Game-day traffic.
Typical response for Baton Rouge. The plants aren't a risk, by the way.
Pros:
-Most things that you need are within walking distance and if it isn't, all that is needed is a quick train or bus ride.
-The diversity here is impeccable, as opposed to others where ethnic groups feel more segregated, for instance Little India and the smaller Phillipine section(no name).
-A growing Arts scene within the city developing it's own identity and some great restaurants.
-Seasonal weather
-The "original" architecture of JC is some of the best i have seen.
Cons:
-Constant association with ny all the time,
-Uninspiring architecture "New" in part due to developers who try to market it as a cheap ny(which it is not)
-it is only 15sq mi, may not sound like much but at times makes is feel as if i am in a small area. -some idiotic and questionable policies and ordinances.
-Not much night life in the city proper
-High cost of living (taxes, rent, etc)
Altough it may seem that there are more cons than pros, JC has GREAT potential to be a destination city for people without being associated with ny. It is just a matter of changing some regulations and getting rid if certain politicians and being able to make the city known.
If i could change anything, i would change the new buildings and homes being built. They're so generic and plain, i would try to provide a unique style that is JC inspired. For instance taking attributes from the different nationalities that are here (Indian, Hispanic, etc) and find a way to incorporate it with each other. The city is changing, so now would be the perfect time for JC to find a way to separate itself.
likes:
I live within walking distance of a lot of stores.
I live in a well treed neighborhood.
Neighbors are awesome.
Its a charming older 70s style subdivision and not a crappy suburb.
Mall and lots of shopping just across the street from subdivision.
Cajun food galore.
Cajun people galore.
Active nightlife of all sorts.
Nobody is pretentious (except some in River Ranch but they arent by me)
Subdivision is located at the intersection of two main roads and all the stuff along them.
Lots of gun owners.
The layout is a nice grid pattern. No spaghetti roads or cul de sacs.
Outdoor adventures are a short drive away.
Economically stable with considerable city growth.
Pretty low cost of living.
Lots of anime/gaming fans.
The main drug problem seems to be limited to marijuana. Much better than meth heads everywhere.
Clean industry/non-polluted air.
Lots of people with money which keeps the projects going and means a lot of awesome cars on the streets.
dislikes:
traffic can get bad.
lots of through traffic in the subdivision makes noise.
Lots of stray dogs/cats.
it can get HOT.
hurricanes make it kind of scary to live around so many trees.
Lots of litter on the roads/walkways.
2 Seasons - Summer and less Summer.
Lots of bureaucracy prevents some things from improving (getting better though)
High incidence of drunk driving.
Not much of a skyline. Its probably one of the flattest cities of 120k people anywhere.
Public transportation is dangerous/ a joke.
- warm, down to earth people
-four seasons--our springs and autumns are near perfection
-low COL
-traffic is managable
-lots to do, close proximity to high profile college sports, major league
venues, and all of the amenities of living near the Great Lakes
-my family is here
-lots of job opportunities if you're in the medical field, and some world class medical facilities right in our backyard (I'm an RN)
Dislikes:
-peoples' impressions of our area as a vast, industrial wasteland with the ghettos of Detroit for a backdrop--where I live I am surrounded by cornfields, subdivisions, and wide open spaces...really!
-the prolonged, gray winters--I HATE driving in snow/freezing rain
-the natives' low self esteem when we have so many great things going for us here
-terrible roads once you get off the interstate--this place is pothole heaven!
Likes:
Nature trails, plenty of them.
Beautiful scenery in some areas.
Dislikes:
Not very walkable if you need to do errands or go to work if you're car-less.
One of the banks here had suffered 3 thefts in 3 different times within a year to a year and half.
More bad drivers around here.
Potholes - THEY NEEDED TO BE FIXED ASAP!
no people. few people related problems, aside from rednecks letting their dogs run loose and driving their snowmobiles up and down the streets in the winter

the same thing that I hate: the weather
It seems to weed people out who want to be here vs. those who want to take advantage of a place.
