Most don't seem to be afraid to give every detail about their lives, whether or not it is a detail to be proud of. They don't bottle anything up. Whereas most people in the world only give you a limited scope of who they really are and the rest of their life they remain a secret. This whole reckless honesty seems taboo to me.

This varies a lot depending upon what part of the country you grew up in. Growing up in New England, not only weren't you emotionally open with strangers, but it was generally seen as rude to just go up to someone you don't know and start casual conversation.

I'm not very open. But in general, Americans like to talk a lot and share and gloat.

Depends on where. In Portland, Oregon, that wasn't the case at all when I lived there. But in the Midwest, south, and much of the West, yes that is indeed true in many areas.

You don't form very deep connections by keeping secrets. In a country of 312 million people, it helps to have connections. Or at the very least, it's very fulfilling to tell a story to someone. Americans like to relate to one another and even actually learn about one another despite what you may see in social and news media. Of course it varies from person to person and there are plenty of things many people like to share only with an intimate circle of friends or family, but overall, I couldn't think of any reason why anyone would actively want to close themselves off unless they're having deep emotional issues.

I once spent 45 minutes talking to a random stranger who was quite older than me and we shared our life stories. I never even asked her for her name.

Because we're an 'open society' we have the freedom to say what we want.
Lots of other 'closed' countries will take action against you if you say something against them.
We learn from others and we'd like them to learn from us.

Have you ever encountered a London cabbie? The ones I rode with never stopped talking. All about anything including the story of their lives. All very entertaining though.

This is an awfully broad generalization.
