We have the same thing here in America. In some places it's more common than in other places, but you can find that usage of "American" and that overall mindset everywhere.

What I loved is when a Sikh buddy of mine's family put an "American owned" sign on their convenience store/gas station. After all, they were all American citizens, my friend and his sisters and cousins all having been born right there in NJ.

In the USA, sociologists/ intellectuals use the common term "WASP" meaning "White Anglo-Saxon Protestant."

Another consideration is, that most of the USA's (and I think Argentina's) immigration from southern and eastern Europe, occurred between the years 1880 and 1910. So these southern and eastern European families have been assimilated in the USA for a longer time, than similar immigrants in Australia have.

America is an extraordinarily bigoted country. So when people think or say "Americans" they are thinking of White People. It really doesn't matter if most Black and all Indeginious cultures have been in the Americas long before Europeans immigration surges in 1800-1900s. Whites run the show and dictate who is and who isn't a real American.

This photo says a lot!

But yet we have all these people, including on this forum, bellyaching about how white men are discriminated against in this society. How absurd.

Fair Warning: If geography is removed from the thread topic and it becomes all about race, the thread is going to get off topic for this forum in a hurry and it will be moved to P&OC.

Yes, Indians do this often, calling white people American. It annoys me because I want to be like, "You're American too!" Not sure why people are bringing up bigotry.... it has nothing to do with that.

I will just play Devil's Advocate here, but the Natives nor the Africans invented the name 'America' for the landmass that bears the name.

I know a lot of Natives from several different tribes (there are at least a dozen within a 2 hour drive of here) and many of them say the 'official' names of their tribes with barely concealed disgust. Sandia, Santa Domingo, San Felipe, nor Navajo are words in their languages but rather the names their oppressors and enemies gave them.

Yes, to me it perpetrates a sense of division between the groups when none needs to exist. Why people feel the need to constantly group themselves to get some kind of identity I don't know (well I do know, but it still annoys me).

Anyway to tie it back to geography, do you think there is regional variation when it comes to this? Are West Coasters not likely to distinguish whites as being more American or American-only?
