Baton Rouge has always been seen as an important but mid-sized city, however I recently read the 2020 census may place the metro area population at over 1 million people, vs 800,000 in the 2010 census. This would technically put Baton Rouge in the same league as New Orleans, Raleigh, Richmond, Salt Lake City, etc. East Baton Rouge Parish is now the most populous parish in Louisiana, above Orleans Parish which is the city of New Orleans.

Colorado Springs is another city whose stature has grown significantly in the past 20 years.

These are my picks.

I think in 50 - 100 years, these will be in the "major city" categories in the US (over 500k in the city, and a metro of over 2 million+):

Huntsville, Alabama
Clarksville, Tennessee
Murfreesboro, Tennessee
Greenville, South Carolina
Lexington, Kentucky
San Angelo, Texas
Flagstaff, Arizona
Roanoke, Virginia
Wilmington, North Carolina

NWArkansas is one of the most certain bets missed by all. Two hit on part of it, but it is defined as Bentonville, Springdale, Rogers and Fayetteville. Fast growing with three major corporations and its a university area in pretty setting. It is faster growing then Little Rock cited by many in the same state.

It is around 550k population and grew at a rate of almost 25% over the past decade.. I can see it breaking 1M by 2050 and it will keep on soaring

Within Florida, I think Lakeland has a shot at becoming a major city. It’s close to Tampa and Orlando, it’s got a number of corporate HQs or at least satellite officer, their downtown is coming together, and land in the area is cheap so it will probably continue to be developed.

Incorrect.

They're up 68k people to 870k for the 2020 census.

Flagstaff can barely handle the amount of people they have now, absolutely no chance it becomes “major city” not even sure it has growth potential to get to that point.

St George will be the next Boise if it wants to become that.

St George Utah has most potential out of any area besides maybe Austin Texas, not sure if Austin is still “small city”

I would say those 2, Boise ID, Omaha Nebraska, Raleigh NC, Huntsville AL, Knoxville TN, maybe an area like Roanoke VA although I don’t think that area want to become much bigger maybe closer to mid size city there, maybe Provo Utah since SLC is already getting close to being maxed out….
