LOL ... Mountains may be beautiful, but I hate driving in them!

That being said, I'm gonna second (third?) the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I-94 through North Dakota in August is lovely, a real surprise the last time I made a cross-country drive. Not a mountain road, obviously, but with the badlands at the west end and sunflower fields all along the way, it's as nice a freeway drive as you can ask for.

I-90 from chicago to Oregan, and I-80 from Chicago to Salt Lake city are my two favorites.

I know what you mean, Drover. When I have to go that way, I take old US 30 between Sugar Grove and Rock Falls, then pick up 88 there. It's still corn city all the way, but old 30 is relatively traffic free, there's no toll, it goes through some cool little towns, and it's actually shorter than 88 (look at the map: 88's an arc, 30's a straight line).

PA's got some of the most gorgeous scenery in the country. Specifically, I-80 in the central and western part of the state, and the National Road in the SW corner of the state.

I've also enjoyed driving down some of the 2 lane highways thru the dense green pine forests of Mississippi. SW Wisconsin is beautiful, pick any 2 lane. Hwy 38 north from Grand Rapids, Minnesota into the national forest is stunning, as is Highway 61 along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Close by is Highway 1 from Ely down to the big lake. There's an eerie beauty to US2, along the High Line in western ND and eastern MT. CA 128 from Cloverdale west to the coast is stunning, through the Boon Valley and into the redwood groves, ending high atop a cliff over the Pacific.

LA Hwy 1 south to Grand Isle was also a memorable drive, as was the Tamiami Trail across the Everglades. US1 to Key West is kind of cool, but perhaps overrated IMHO.

I could go on, but that's enough for now. I don't call me Ben Around for nothin'!
