The title is broad, but allow me to specify. I very much desire to, at some point in my life, relocate to a large city preferrably in the desert southwest which has an excellent, or at least satisfactory mass transit system and one where I don't require a car for very much of my daily activities as well as leisurely ones like walking down the street to bars, restaurants, etc. Something along the lines of Chicago or Boston, except in the desert with mountains.

Honestly, I don't even think this city exists in the southwest, but maybe I'm not opening my eyes enough. I've thought about cities like Portland and Seattle in the northwest, but I'm not too big on the periods of drizzle and clouds most of the year, plus I love the desert. The only place I can really think of that comes close is Tempe in the Phoenix area, but of course Phoenix itself is notorious for sprawling subdivisions. Outside of the strip, same with Las Vegas. Albuquerque isn't large enough for what I'm looking for (still a beautiful city though IMO).

Can anyone help me out on this situation? Any suggestions out there?

you're talking about the SW, nothing is what is considered "walkable", at least to people on this forum. However, i'll let in on a secret, people walk in new mexico and arizona walk all the time. and they do it well, sometimes without drunken stumbing.

Denver is the only city within any proximity that offers what you're looking for. I realize it's not the Southwest but it would be the closest in terms of geography and feel.

Flagstaff is walkable. Has a high altitude. College town. Maybe Santa Fe? Haven't been. Probably some smaller cities in California might be.

Santa Fe extremely walkable. Is that a large enough city for you?

Phoenix can be walkable. Live in downtown Scottsdale. There is a ton going on there!

If Albuquerque is not large enough for you, then it is Phoenix or nothing (for the SW proper).

But then, do you really want to walk around a city where the temperature is over 100 degrees during the daytime for months on end?
