Rents start at 1k and up, not including utlities, transportation, food, clothing and a myriad of other costs. San Francisco is the most expensive city in CA so I don't know how you can live on 20k unless you're renting a room in a trailer in the middle of nowhere. Existing and living are two seperate things.
Like I said, not all of California meets the stereotypes, even within urban areas. The state is quite diverse. one thing I do is: -I cook from scratch a lot and grow a lot of my own food. But I also know how to get a lot of free food, and many cheap but good places to eat. I live in the S.F. east bay area, in a working/middle class suburb. I rent a cottage with one other person, also low income. (they are on disability SSI)
