I have lived in Chicago my whole life (I'm in my early 20s) and I am tired of it. I want to get away from big city living and go somewhere where people are friendlier, life is slower paced and the men appreciate the women. Somewhere where people make an honest living. A beach (ocean, lake, river, anything!) would be an added plus!
Oh sorry that was not very specific! Well, in terms of budget, I currently pay $900/month rent. I wouldn't really want to spend any more than that. But ideal weather would be warm and sunny. As few windy, cold, cloudy and gloomy days as possible! Somewhere with beautiful natural scenery.
Jacksonville might be a good choice. Very friendly people, some basic big city amenities while still having a small town feel, slower paced lifestyle, affordable, warm, sunny, and close to beaches.
timeofseasons- lake michigan is beautiful! but unfortunately the water is always cold and the winters last way too long! i was thinking somewhere a little warmer. i'm not familiar with the other great lakes… are there towns around the other lakes with bearable winters?
jayp1188- jacksonville sounds nice! any other suggestions in the south east U.S.?
Any small town in Texas is going to be super friendly. You may even want to consider Tyler. We have many of the bigger city amenities without the hassle of living in a bustling metropolitan area.
Then again it all depends on what your definition of a "small town" is. Coming from Chicago, one could easily brush Austin off as being a small town even though it sits at the center of a 1.7+ million metro region.

thanks for the suggestions! I've never been to Texas but I've heard lots of great things. I don't know if I would consider Austin a "small town." 1.7+ million is a lot of people! But I wonder if it has a "small town" feel, i.e. more friendly people and less corporate/skyscraper feel of a big city?
How small are you talking??? Small as in 30,000 or small as in 1,000?
The weather you would perfer doesn't exist in my state, but it is nice the greater part of the year
Elkins or Buchannon, WV might fit
both are towns less than 10,000 people, but have clean downtowns with plenty of amenidies. And the great outdoors is right outside your front door.
Elkins is within an hour of 3 ski resort areas, and tons more within mins.
