I think political and economic issues become more important when choosing states to live in vs. just favorite states. So this list is different from my top five favorite states.
I'm going with:
CO, IN, NE, NH, UT
Honorable mention:
ID, MN, ND, SD, WY
Indiana is the most vulnerable of the top five, it could be switched for an honorable mention.

Reason: more detail
1. New Jersey (family is from there, hopefully I'll be there soon enough)
2. Illinois (solely in the Chicago area)
3. Colorado (never been but have many good friends who say it is absolutely gorgeous)
4. California (I've heard mixed opinions about the state, but I would love to live there regardless, with my interest being more focused on the Bay Area than SoCal).
5. Massachusetts (Boston is great, beautiful scenery, great food, lots of ethnic diversity, great historical architecture, etc)
