Lexington's High Street corridor (which divides downtown and the Univ. of Kentucky) is pretty nice but has lost too much historic buildings. It could have been a miniature version of Louisville's amazing Bardstown Rd, but as it is only a couple blocks are "happening" places for nightlife and urban living.
I wish City-data had a "favorites" option so I could save this topic under that category. (for traveling/exploring purposes)
Atlanta was already mentioned and I second Midtown as the vibrant part of the city. Buckhead could probably be added in another 20 years or so depending on the recession. (Not much pedestrian activity outside Phipps & Lenox compared to other cities of similar size)
In my hometown of Savannah, it's definitely City Market, River Street and Broughton Street in the Historic District of downtown.
Downtown Jefferson Street - bars, night clubs, cajun restaurants, art museums, festival grounds.
Camelia Street at River Ranch - higher end trendy shopping, clubs, restaurants, new urbanist design, and multi million dollar housing. Bentleys and Lamborghinis at the drive-thru.
For "happening" section I vote for uptown (Gaslamp -downtown is tourists) Hillcrest, University Heights, North Park, South Park- 30th St. corridor.
