APNewsBreak: USOC officially out of the running for 2020 Olympics - The Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/dcunited/apnewsbreak-usoc-officially-out-of-the-running-for-2020-olympics/2011/08/22/gIQABdqIWJ_story.html - broken link)
The way Chicago got screwed over, good. **** the olympics.
I strongly believe the Atlanta 1996 games ruined the country's chances of getting the Olympics in the near future. Atlanta was such a poor host city it was an embarrassment to our nation.

I hope the Olympics NEVER come to the USA. Whatever city hosts it is always left in financial ruin.
Actually Los Angeles in 1984 didn't do too bad and made a nice profit of $200 million. How'd they do it? They used existing facilities and stadiums instead of building brand new venues. Plus, they had a guy with a jetpack and Lionel Richie in the opening and closing cermonies...
Interesting fact--New York City came within 9 votes of recieving the 1984 games, the closest they ever came to receiving the Olympics.
It might be true that the Summer Olympics works best for countries that want more prestige or publicity or more of both. The US has been famous and powerful for generations now.
Although the Winter Olympics I think still largely seems to be the advanced or established nations. I'm not sure how they work in terms of profit/loss either.

I think Atlanta gets unfairly ripped. Yes, there were some transportation issues and the unfortunate Olympic Park bombing. But the IOC's main criticism, if I recall correctly, is that they felt the Atlanta games were overcommercialized. Those numerous corporate sponsorships, however, ensured that Atlantans weren't saddled with a bunch of debt from the games. I thought Atlanta did a good job with the venues, and it wasn't left with a bunch of white elephants. The IOC, however, apparently believes in more government subsidies and construction of elaborate facilities that may have limited utility once the games are complete. I'm with others, therefore, who say screw the IOC.
Personally, I was more embarassed by the parade of pickup trucks during the opening ceremonies in Atlanta.

The IOC is full of intelligent individuals who understand that the U.S. is full of a variety of cities and that Atlanta is not representative of the entire country in that regard. If the so-called "Atlanta effect" was as strong as you say, Salt Lake City wouldn't have gotten the Winter Olympics in 2002.

My memory may be off, but I think the decision to award the '02 winter games to SLC had already been made before the Atlanta summer games took place.
