We are a couple in our 40’s (no children) looking to find a (temporary--but could go perm if the place is right) type of employment that will pay high for about 1 year in a place with a low cost of living (we will rent) and low crime.

We are trying to think “outside the box” on this one as far as work goes.
What we’ve done in the past (bookkeeping/admin work and local CDL driver) doesn’t have to be what we do for the next year. We will consider outside US if it’s worth it.

Traditional jobs are OK too, if the pay is good (better than other parts of US) and the cost of living is lower than average for the US.

Climate, people, industry doesn’t matter because it would be for about a year only.

For example….Alaskan crab fisherman. But it’s just too dangerous, even though the pay is fantastic. I should mention that my husband would get on a crab boat in a heartbeat if not for the fact that I won't let him---so there aren't many things he wouldn't do given the right salary...

We’ve also thought about enrolling in 3 to 6 month learning programs to change our careers, but we are stuck on just what those programs should be. My husband works out at a gym a lot. He thinks getting certified as a Personal Trainer could be a possibility. But my question to him is where could he do that for the most money and still not pay outrageous rent?

Any input from the community would be greatly appreciated!

Most lucrative careers cannot be obtained through 3-6 month learning programs. And if there were a place with a low cost of living, with plentiful high-paying jobs that were that easy to obtain and safe, we'd all be there, living it up.
If you are interested in changing fields, you could consider healthcare - LPNs, CNAs, and radiology techs and the like are in high demand, are paid fairly well, and I believe the schooling for these jobs is 2 years or less. You could become an RN in two years and be paid well, and have your choice of jobs. RNs are in huge demand.
My husband and I recently moved to the suburbs of Kansas City, MO and one of our primary reasons was the low cost of living. We love it here. However, many jobs here do not pay well. We are fortunate that our lines of work are paid fairly well here. If what you do is paid well here, I would certainly recommend it.

Thanks for the reply!

We aren't looking for a place so much as alternative, temporary jobs that are high-earning (i.e.--Alaskan king crab fishermen).

We're not looking for anything that would be considered "traditional." To us, the entire health care industry is a traditional type of employment. We are look for something different, money-making and TEMPORARY...nothing over a year.

What we do now does not pay well, that is why we created this thread---to get help from the community.
