You drive to Mt. Desert Island, OP asked for islands that were only accessible by plane or ferry.

My favorite is Isle Royale in Lake Superior. No motels or resorts, but it has scenery, character, and everything I really like on an Island.

Of the ones listed I'd kind of like to see Kodiak or Mackinac. I'm kind of a cool/cold weather person. Although it's still August so maybe others would like a little cool too.

Alas I don't think I've ever been to an island even though I'd like to.

My favorite one is the one I live on, but I guess it doesn't count, because we have a bridge. So....

Monhegan, Matinicus, Islesboro, Vinalhaven, North Haven, Warren Island State Park, Isle au Haut, Frenchboro, Swan's Island, or the Cranberry Islands. All somewhere between Mid-Coast and Downeast Maine.
