Which states/areas are generally the healthiest? I'm especially looking for areas that have a lot of farmers markets and organic foods, no nuclear power, less pollution, and overall more eco-friendly.
It lets you select the health indicators that matter most to you, then creates a ranking. It also ranks by all categories (in summary). Before doing that bit of research, I was thinking that my state, Massachusetts scored well on your criteria. And indeed it ranks 2nd overall after Vermont. New England is clearly the healthiest region, with the best 4 and all in the top 10. Also excellent: Minnesota (6) and Utah (7).
I was going to suggest Vermont before I even read the Health Rankings report. Burlington and Brattleboro would be my recommendations for you.
If you'd like someplace less chilly and with a more moderate four-season climate I'd recommend Carrboro, NC
Great, I'll look into those. Vermont would be far too chilly for me.
And I have heard the same thing about Colorado. Nice place to visit, but too cold for me personally. Wonder why the Northeast and Colorado are so much healthier overall than the rest of the country?

Generally they have higher SES, higher educational attainment, better access to outdoor recreation amenities, and built environments that encourage outdoor pursuits.

Well here in Michigan we do have access to farm fresh goods and we dont have alot of pollution, BUT I wouldnt say we are healthy. THe fact that this is meat and potatos country has lead to alot of obesity here, and we dont have organic food stores, and we are certainly not eco-friendly. (Michigan=car culture) What you are describing sounds more like the west coast, or maybe parts of New England. California is very much what your describing.

I think it's from a combination of overall better education (the Northeast especially has the better public school systems), a more progressive population and better access to organic vegetables and pastured/free range livestock. It's not exclusive obviously to those areas and there are similar pockets most everywhere in the country. The Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro "triangle" in North Carolina is one of them.
