Being a midwest guy, I would have to be biased and say the people in the midwest age generally friendly and helpful.
There are friendly and good people all over the country. Usually people respond in kind to your disposition----if you treat them fairly they will reciprocate-----to those who dont wish to be pleasant to you say bon voyage to them and good luck.
swampbird, i would hold fast, as the question is posed, that the midwest plains states are particularly down to earth, kind, and unpretentious. that is also true w/ the south. generally speaking, people in memphis are completely different in attitude, approachability, and genuineness, which is not to say those qualities are not to be found by many in other states, regions, and cities.
Whaaaaat? Philly people are very brutal and not cool. They argue over petty stuffs. They're very rude and obnoxious. They're cold too.

This disease spills into Southwestern NJ as well where I currently reside.
