Where to go, where to go?

Needs: acreage for gardens and small livestock.
Rural with enough rainfall to support the grass/gardens without too much irrigation need.
Community without religious bigotry and "small mindedness" to where the church is the community and if you don't "go to church", you don't belong.
Affordable (Santa Fe doesn't work, nor Santa Barbara, nor anywhere in California). Florida (for me) has too much heat and the insurance rates are through the roof.

Are there any such communities? Please voice your favorite small town/city areas.

I've been thinking Corvallis/Medford/Sweet Home in Oregon, North Carolina mountains northwest of Asheville for two areas. Prescott or Payson AZ?

I'm a 60+ artist, and want to have my sheep, dogs, cats and organic gardens when I move. And be able to continue to ride my motorcycle at least eight months of the year.

New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine.. etc. (Maine would be stretching due to weather maybe.)

Vermont has the highest percentage of atheists of any state, and most of it is rural.

Definitely anywhere in New England. I've lived here nearly my entire life and religion is not important to most people. I am an atheist and don't really face any problems here in CT.

Prescott and Payson are very conservative communities. Both have an extremely large Mormon population. No place in Arizona will suit your desires, especially if you're looking for a place where you will not need to water/irrigate.

Don't write off Northern Cal, especially the far north, more inland. For example, inland parts of Humboldt and Mendocino Counties.

You just described Vermont. Ithaca, New York may work too.

Having been to Hayfork, CA, I can attest to its beauty.
I forgot to mention that having some cultural richness is also a need, because I am a bibliophile and college educator by employment. So a college town keeps drawing me in.

Just how harsh are the winters in Vermont? Does it have the "mud season" like Idaho and North Georgia in the spring?
