New York City: Crown jewel of the U.S. Is so much above other U.S. cities it isn't funny. Unofficial world capital.

Miami: Only tropical climate on U.S. mainland. Has more of an impact overseas with more ties to the Caribbean and Latin America, than with America. Feel, scenary, and culture all different from a typical U.S. city.

Honolulu: Self explanatory

I would contend that Chicago is unique.

San Juan, Puerto Rico is probably quite different than any other US city. Not sure if it's unique by Latin American standards.

Ruso, North Dakota is a city with just four people. North Dakota refers to all incorporated places as "cities."

Maharishi Vedic City, Iowa is, I assume, fairly unique.

A lot of cities have unique qualities. But are any cities so unique that they can't be compared to other cities? I highly doubt it.

It seems to me that almost every large city has it's own personality, some more than others.

Certainly New Orleans, because of the French Quarter, although Charleston, SC is very similar in many ways.

No place on earth is like New York City, as the other poster mentioned, Key West for location, but actually El Paso for that reason too. No place is like Detroit (some folks may say thank goodness), Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Fransisco.

Gosh, there are so many.

It goes far deeper than the French Quarter.

I agree, actually. It's 3rd in population and it's not really even close to L.A. at all anymore, yet it has the amenities and is world-reknown on the level of NYC, London, Paris or Tokyo.

As others have mentioned, other cities that are truly their own animal are:

New Orleans: nothing like it culturally....not even close. Doesn't have to be big to be known.
Las Vegas: Similar to N.O. but not culturally. City built on gambling.
Montreal: Canadian, I know, but unique nontheless
Honolulu: looks more like something out of S. America than the U.S. Tropical, dense, isolated as hell.....unique.
New York: Biggest, baddest city in the country. Influence felt all over the world. Only Tokyo or London compare.

Lafayette, La and surrounding towns. Probably the smallest of the cities mentioned. You won't find Cajuns anywhere else in America.
