Bull Connor. That was 57 years ago.

Birmingham is a city that's undergone a remarkable change. We are a renowned medical research center with one of the country's best medical schools. We are gaining props as minor foodie destination. And yet, none of our headway will ever matter.

If one day some researcher at UAB stumbles on a miraculous cure for cancer, I'm pretty sure that the news story will open up on footage of the Civil Rights marchers getting pummeled by spray from the fire hoses. There seems to be no escaping it.

The various suburbs where I lived may be unknown to metro Detroiters, but "Detroit" is clear enough that it doesn't need a list.
