I know you can't even begin to compare the cost of living between LA and Atlanta so I'm leaving that out of the mix. Aside from this, I'm looking for feedback on which city people would recommend in terms of living and why. Would love answers from people with small kids too as to why one city 'tops' the other. Thank you!!
LA is great for singles, outdoorsy/beachy/snow types, clubgoers, and business people. Dunno about parents. There's some places around here I'd consider raising a family if I could afford a place to live.

Sweatea, I don't think you can disregard the cost of living when considering the merits of living in Los Angeles versus Atlanta. Simply put, if LA had the same home prices and cost of living as Atlanta, it's population (already obscenely high in what is a very congested metro region) would probably double in six months time. A lot of people would love to live in Los Angeles, notwithstanding the horrendous traffic, if they could buy a single family home for $170k (ATL's median home price). When you factor in cost of living and home prices, I think Atlanta wins hands down in terms of "liveability" between the two. But Atlanta's relatively low cost of living and home prices (for a major city) are perhaps its biggest charms. If Atlanta had LA's home prices, the steady stream of transplants that have been coming to Atlanta for the past decade would likely be a fraction of its current number.
LA is more beautiful and as one of the world's major metropolises, it has way more to do. It's in close proximity to world-class skiing and well-known beautiful beaches.
Atlanta, although not nearly as beautiful as LA, is beautiful with rolling hills and heavily forested terrain. The nightlife is good and as for a city its size, there is a lot going on here as well in regards to arts and entertainment.
The climate in LA reigns supreme, but Atlanta also has a mild climate that experiences a touch of winter. Both cities have great airports from which you can fly direct to most places in the world. Also, both cities have horrendous traffic.
If you ask me, it all depends on your priorities in life and what you prefer. Atlanta is great for affordability and a strong job market. LA is great if you love outdoors recreation and the hustle and bustle of a world class city.
