The beauty is, with the exception of the SW desert, wherever there are mountains, there are usually trees (and even in the desert, you will find forested terrain in the high elevations).

You could pick a lot of nice places, big and small, along any of the big three mountain chains in the U.S. -- Appalachian/Blue Ridge, Rockies, Cascades/Sierras.

Unless you want to live IN the mountains, the Rockies may not be for you. At least in Colorado. There are really no natural trees on the front range. Some areas of the city are tree-y but it's nothing like a natural forest.

Northwestern Maine...Northern two thirds of New Hampshire. Mountains not quite as large as the Rockies, however they are massive and the woods are deep and endless.
