I agree. For this reason I am surprised that NY has as great a density as it does. The footprint of the NYC metro, plus the footprints of the state's other populous metros (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany) are relatively small. Meanwhile, Northern NY which comprises ~ 25% of NY's land area (north of the Mohawk to the Canadian border) is one of the least populated areas in the Northeast.
