I always thought it was a southern thing. Didn't know it's more widespread. There's one a few miles from me here in Florida, I go occasionally.

Waffle House originates from Norcross, Georgia. That explains the high number in GA.

I assumed that. And it looks like you originate from there as well.

They aren't just restaurants, they're community gathering places and an institution in the south. It's where every southern college student ends up at 3 am drunk. It's a part of our culture that you can't possibly understand because, simply, you're not southern.

I don't know much about Michigan, but I imagine there must be SOME kind of regional restaurant that's a similar institution up there. If not, I feel sorry for you.
Coney Island is our "Waffle House" I guess, huge part of Detroit culture. 24/7 dining with LOTS of different options. One by me served breakfast all day too. I guess IHOP does the trick as well. There are also local places that aren't chain at all, you would just have to be from around there to even know about it. That being said, I would still love a couple of Waffle Houses to be in Michigan.

I had no idea PA had any. Philly def don't have them. lol. We got our iHop , Dennys, Diners. Here the Diners seem more popular then iHop and Dennys. Not too many Dennys here either.

Waffle House is pretty gross. There is only one in NoVa and gets no business so it will most likely be gone soon. I'll stick to my Cracker Barrel

Do they seriously serve grits? No wonder they haven't managed to infiltrate their way into the Northern markets.
It would appear that several of your neighbors aren't as repulsed by grits as you are:

You can find pretty much any type of food in a metro of that size. No one eats grits up here beyond a few former-southerners and the soul food crowd. I personally don't get the attraction, don't like the texture or really anything about grits, but I realize that not everyone is going to like odd regional comfort foods if they didn't grow up with them.
