There's a sizeable black Muslim enclave in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. They work pretty hard at crime prevention. Certainly can't fault 'em for that!
Today many African-Americans are converting to Islam from all walks of life. While yes, another of convicts did convert to Islam while in prison that is not often the case today. Im from Chicago which has a large African American sunni Muslim commnity and the majority of Muslims i know there did not come out of the prison system...especially today. Many have converted from the college campus, as well as Christianity. When i move down to Atlanta it was the same way. In the past many inmates were inspired by Malcolm X so many blacks converted to Islam. Some became role models. Some used the religion for security and as a means to get out on parole. Some sayed Muslim once they got out while outers went back to criminal ways.
But today there is growth of Islam in many African American communities for various reasons. I know on my job a number of employees converted to Islam. I used to talk with some and people became attracted even more when some Muslims were hired. They seen of pray, fast, and how we carried ourselves. And not a single person was NOI type person. There were a number of Christian women who converted to Islam just on the basis of not just belief, but also Muslim men were REAL men. Most of the non Muslim African American men were all foul mouth, talk crazy, hip cool gangster idiots. In another case my daughters attend two different universities, and they tell me that Islam is popular on the campusus. A lot of students have converted to al-Islam on the college scene.
We have to stop allowing ourselves to get suck into the false media notions that only black prisoners convert to Islam. Thats false. Maybe in the 1950's or 60's that could have been true to some degree, but again certainly thats not the case today in 2012. In addition there are more mixed marriages today, and more professional African Americans, entertainers, musicians, politicians, actors and actresses have converted to Islam even leading up to the president Barack Obama. Mr. Obama is not a practicing Muslim today, but no doubt he has Muslim family ties. Even his name is an Arabic Muslim name. And this is the first time in America's history that a presiden t had a non European name.....a Muslim name at that.
You mean dreary, cold, and grey? Oh, I know the weather is fairly terrible, but that doesn't mean the place should be abandoned or there are no saving graces. Sure, the dampness gets to you, but just wear layers or maybe grow a beard of cover your face so you don't have that cold nipping at your face.

Is that unusual? I see women in full burqas almost weekly in South St. Louis, which has a sizable Middle Eastern population. Not to mention the Detroit area, where burqas are almost as common as baseball caps (embellishing, obviously, but it's a very common sight).

Pretty much every city with a sizable Muslim population has Muslim women that wear burqas. It might show a diversity of religion, but doesn't necessarily equate to having a religiously tolerant population.
I'm not suggesting that Philly is not religiously tolerant -- but the fact that Muslim women wear burqas doesn't prove the case.

All I'm saying is that you don't really see that in cities in the south or the west coast. I'm pretty sure a muslim wearing a burqa in cities like San Diego or Jackson, MS would more likely be stared down like an alien or even possible harassed. In those cities it would probably be shocking for most residents to see that(especially in downtown areas) while in Philly it's no big deal. That's the difference.
