Oh, it'd be great for Salt Lake City to be the next trendy city, wouldn't it?
It would be wonderfully surprising, and actually doesn't seem so crazy. There's the wasatch back for ski bums as well as the sundance and slamdance film festivals. They also have an oddly great mass transit system.

Salt Lake City's one place that could actually benefit from the hipster faux-speakeasy trend. Although in Salt Lake it'd be even cooler because they'd be real speakeasys to get around the state's somewhat arcane liquor laws...

I think it would be funny if a Red Light District evolved a few blocks away from Temple Sqaure. Vegas is just down the pike from there. You can run but you can't hide SLC. <sinister laugh> (oh lord please forgive me for lobbying to corrupt SLC)
There is a growing hipster scene as the Downtown area is being revitalized.
There is a growing arts and culinary scene as well. The city is becoming more sophisticated and have long outgrown its "cowtown" stereotype.
Sacramento is one of the oldest cities in California, and the capitol, thus, it has a very nice historic urban core. The city's continued focus on revitalizing and redeveloping this area has been attracting a growing artist class.
Sacramento is also located very nicely within 1.5 hours from the bay area and within 2 hours from Lake Tahoe, while being extremely affordable in comparison to either place. Most hipsters do not have a ton of money, so considering Sacramento's growing revitalization and sophistication, I think this will allow more young hipsters to look at Sacramento as a viable and attractive option as a place to reside and have the lifestyle they want without breaking the bank.
I'm sorry but I have found Sacramento to be very bland, but I was there in 06, maybe some things have changed
