Yeah, Austin thrived in an otherwise ultra conservative state. MO as a whole is pretty conservative (mostly Southern MO) but KC, MO, especially the city core is hard hard core blue. KC has had no problem attracting young educated and the creative class (KC also has a pretty good tech culture) but I don't ever see it becoming 'trendy' and hope it doesn't.

Though on the other hand I don't see Boise becoming the new Seattle or Portland. Despite being nominally part of the Northwest(depending on if you include Idaho in that designation), Boise feels a little different to me. More conservative in some ways and a little more clean cut and with a lot fewer pretentions. All in all it's probably closer to Salt Lake City and Denver. Portland and Seattle always had a kind of a funkier vibe that attracted disaffected East Coasters and Midwesterners looking for a cheaper artistic scene(in past years at least).

That being said, I hear downtown Boise is getting a lot trendier these days--I know people from Idaho who decided to move back there after stints in Seattle and Portland, and there's a decent number of music venues, bands, bars, and restaurants. A good number of events in the summer as well. It's still very unhyped and off the radar. Definitely attractive for those who love the outdoors with the good access to skiing and the mountains--and I see it attracting a similar demographic to those that flock to Denver--it could sort of resemble a smaller version of that city on some levels.
Good points. Boise often is referred to as a mini Portland in the making because of some similarities, NW (Portland is the nearest large city west of Boise and has some ties; both economics and family for a lot of people), downtown has small walkable blocks, boutiquish shops, brewpubs, coffee shops, artistic, birkenstocks, etc, a mix of the NW funk with some Mountain West relaxation. I used to live in Salt Lake and Boise definitely seems to have more of a Portlandish vibe to it then say SLC or Denver. I would even go as far as saying Boise is more trendy than SLC because SLC is prim and proper, stuffy in a way and lacks the pedestrian, street level downtown vibe Boise has, walking around downtown Boise is much more engaging than walking around downtown SLC. Boise would more similar to Denver if SLC and Denver were the choices to compare to.

i think the "trendy" cities will probably be the ones were the populous is moving/migrating to. Actually it's already happening. But not in the sense of "pop-culture" necessarily. Pop culture trends can be fickle......

I think it will be Milwaukee. Wisconsin produces lots of hipsters, historically they went to college in Madison and then moved to Chicago, Minneapolis or the coasts after they graduated. Now that Milwaukee is becoming cool they are going to start to head there instead. Eventually that will create a critical mass that will draw people from the rest of the country.

Milwaukee is urban, dirt cheap and right next to Chicago. It has a decent economy. Those are all good things.

If you are correct in your definition of trendy and how it applies to cities than becoming the next trendy city is like politicians kicking the can down the road.
I would agree and many cities can house many more people. Detroit and Chicago along can hold 2 million people alone. Pittsburgh can hold around 400,000 more, Cleveland can hold 500,000 more etc. Honestly, an actual gain in population in Pittsburgh will be welcomed since the population hasn't increased since before my parents were born

1. Long Beach CA - Yeah, that's a given

2.Sacramento CA - I suppose

3.Salt Lake City - this will take a while. It will grow & prosper certainly but will take 15-20 years to be 'trendy'

4.Reno NV - Really? Tahoe is great, but Reno? meh....

5.Tucson AZ - there's certainly potential, colllege town, palpable old Southwest feel in pockets

6.Santa Fe & Albuquerque - well duh! I'm moving there. The abundance in artistry alone make them exceptional

7.Des Moines Iowa - don't know.

8.Spokane WA - workaday city. Nice downtown & recreation nearby. Can't see it being trendy though.

9.Omaha - that's what I hear

10.Madison Wisconsin - I think it already is trendy

11.Rochester Minneasota - Grays Anatome meets Mayo clinic? If medical scrubs become the new trend perhaps

12.Raleigh NC - too vanilla and suburban. College town element is there but overall this place is for families and employment seekers, not
enough creativity
.

13.Charleston SC - yeah nice colorful and historic city with great beaches nearby, though I think Savannah is a but less staunchy and more
live and let live
.

14.Columbia SC - never heard anything about it

15.Norfolk VA - maybe

16.Richmond VA - yes potential is definitely there for Richmond, lots of nice architecture and historic areas, could ride on the coattails of DC

17.Kansas City MO & KS - secretly cool city

I would clime in on #10 Madison , way back in the 1970's when I was going to USAF Boot Camp & Tech School...there were these white caucasian cats that ran around with us AA trying their's best to be Hip..

so yeah Madison trys harder than anywhere else here in America to be Hip...I'm from Oklahoma , but have lived in a number of different States
and have actually been to 40 of the 50 States ...and always try to pass thur Madison Wisconsin everytime I drive croos country to see my wifes
family in.......Milwaukee.

Keep on hoping, but don't hold your breath. You're way too idealistic, what makes you think that KC will be able to keep "flying under the radar", especially if it's as great as you and others are saying it is?

Surely no one thought Austin would continue growing at such a fast rate, being the 4th largest city in TX, being in an overwhelmingly "red" state, and having some of the most arduous summer heat in the country.

You are basically saying the same thing that Austinites and maybe Seattle-ites said back before they became "media darlings" or whatever. Many of those same Austinites now moan non-stop about the changes that came with growth.

The question is how KC will handle a potentially heavy increase in population. That remains to be seen.

(An aside: Austin actually grew at a slower rate between 00-10 than it did between 90-10. I was surprised to see that.)

Cool, where did you get that list from? I'm from Columbia. Most liberal city in an extremely conservative state.
