Of all those I've ever been in, I think I liked Orofino, Idaho, the best. I'd want to make sure there is no ski lodge nearby.

I've lived in mountain towns in the Sierras, the Selkirks, both Northern and Southern Rockies, Blue Ridge and Smokies.
My favorite: Black Mountain, NC (near Asheville)
