I visited some friends in Minneapolis-St. Paul a few years back. Prior to my visit, Minneapolis was just another word flying by on the marquee at the airport. Never thought much of it. I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed it! There are some really trendy places downtown, some really great coffee shops in St. Paul, and the city itself just seemed very clean. The people are really friendly, and the city itself is not too far from some beautiful scenery. I had a great time and left wanting to come back for another visit.
Anyone else ever have a similar experience? Doesn't have to be a BIG city, either..
And, one more note... let's keep this one positive, folks!

-Omaha, NE (rolling hills, river, RUNZAs...good Lord, Runzas are good)
-Oklahoma City, OK (bigger, nicer, hipper city than national rep)
-Vancouver, Canada (OK, Vancouver has a really good rep already...but I couldn't believe how much I loved Vancouver when I went there! Compared to Seattle, I actually far preferred Vancouver [at least as a visitor])...
Lawrence Kansas, I must say is a really cool town. I used to thing that Kansas' towns weren't much to brag about, but we decided to stop there for a bite to eat. Then we took a stroll downtown. It' really a great charming place. Of course it's a college town, and that makes all the difference.
Pittsburgh! I had the stereotypical mindset about P'burgh, depressed, ugly, gloomy. I was wrong! Was wowed by all the bridges, and the view from the top of the Monogohela Incline was VERY impressive. Good food and nice people too. Downtown is really cool
My previous experience with the New York metropolitian area had been with Monmouth County, New Jersey (Middletown, NJ), which I just found ugly with a capital U. I foolishly believed all of the suburbs in the New York metropolitian area were like that--miles of sprawl, tract houses, congested roads, strange turn around spots, etc.
When I went to visit my wife's family in Westchester County (specifically, Ossining, NY) , I was very pleasantly surprised as to how attractive it was, with lots of shady trees, charming houses, small businesses, etc. It was nothing like what I saw in NJ.

I agree (Vancouver). It's one of my favorite cities in the world. I have friends in West Van, and I'd move there in a heartbeat. So close to the city, yet smaller town feel, and just GORGEOUS.
