When Time Zones were first established in 1883, they put all of Florida and most of Georgia in Central Time, and New Mexico was divided into three time zones, with a two-hour change at El Paso.

That is actually a 1913 map, but it didn't change much in the first 30 years.

Excluding Hispanic names, the most common surname in the USA that does not have a corresponding county of the same name is Thompson, which ranks 15th among non-hispanic names, and 19th overall. Garcia, Rodriguez, Martinez and Hernandez are also in the top 19, with no county of that name.

Despite its commonality, only two states have ever had a governor named Thompson, who served for four years at the same time in adjacent states (Illinois and Wisconsin), long after all their counties had been named.

After Thompson, the next most common non-Hispanic surnames with no county name are Robinson (#27) and Peterson (#63).

The central business district of St. Louis has been impacted by tornadoes six times since 1870. This is the highest number of downtown tornado strikes of any American city with 50,000 or more inhabitants.

No US state has the letter B in the official postal abbreviation of the state. But four of the ten Canadian provinces do. Only two US states even have the letter B in their spelling, while five Canadian ones do. US and Canadian postal abbreviations do not conflict, which is why Nebraska is NE, not NB.

I should think quite a lot of us have read the whole thread over the period since it's inception. If you mean you just reread it in one sitting, that I'm sure would certainly constitute an oddity of some kind.

It's a lot more interesting than reading the telephone book, right?

Well, when you're in a motel, it's either the phone book or the bible.
