The easternmost point in Kansas (Kansas City,Kansas) is closer to Terre Haute, Indiana (you have to drive through Missouri and Illinois first) than it is to Kanorado,KS (on the border with Colorado).

Reno and Las Vegas (both in Nevada) are connected Salt Lake City,Utah via the Interstate. Strangely, neither city is connected to one another via Interstate, in spite of being in the same state.

2019 is likely the last year Phoenix will be the only capital city with a population of 1 million plus people. Austin is likely to join Phoenix this year.

To give an idea of how long North Carolina is:

Murphy,NC, the westernmost county seat in the state, is closer to the state capitals of: Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and South Carolina, than it is to its own state capital, Raleigh, some 360 miles east.

Murphy,NC is closer to Poplar Bluff,Missouri (461 miles northwest) than it is to Nags Head,NC (550 miles northeast, on the Atlantic Ocean).

Nags Head is so far east within North Carolina, it's closer to Philadelphia and New York City than it is to Murphy,NC, in the far west of the state.

And then it was broken up into other states.

Another fact, Florida used to extend into parts of eastern Louisiana. Hence, certain parts of Louisiana are called "the Florida Parishes".

The London “0 point” (from which they measure distance from London) is not in The City of London but Westminster.

The “smokestack” is Idaho’s panhandle. One and the same.

Kennesaw Mountain (where the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain took place), is the highest point in the Atlanta metropolitan area (it's in Marietta,GA). It's not part of any mountain ranage. It's a monadnock (or inselberg), an isolated hill surrounded by much lower areas. It's the result of a previous mountain range that was eroded and Kennesaw Mountain remained.

Montana comes from the Spanish word for "mountain". Ironically, a majority of Montana's geography consists of plains, grassland, and high plateau. This is even more ironic considering that there are 77 mountain ranges in Montana.
