Not all of Oklahoma City is urban. There are also rural expanses within the city limits, per Oklahoman.com
Jacksonville, Oklahoma City, Kansas City. Those cities have huge footprints, and can cover parts of multiple counties. Then there are cities with tiny footprints, such as Boston, Miami and San Francisco. It always kills me when people compare the cities that cover hundreds of square miles with the tiny ones. It’s apples and oranges.
In that case maybe Houston is the largest city by urban land mass.
The Philadelphia Metropolitan Statistical Area is the only MSA in the United States that covers parts of four states: PA, NJ, DE, and MD.
Footnotes:
The Washington MSA covers parts of three states PLUS the District of Columbia.
The New York CSA (not MSA) covers parts of four states.
The Washington-Baltimore CSA (not MSA) covers parts four states plus D.C.
The Boston-Providence CSA (not MSA) covers parts of four states.
Of course! I should have known better because up in our area there is something similar that you probably also know. I always have wondered why I-82 in Washington State is a lower number than a freeway just to the south in Oregon, I-84. Then I figured out that when I-82 was being planned and built in the late 70's, Oregon's present I-84 was I-80-N. It is all making sense now!
Hey, if it bothers you though, you could always do what this guy did, and take matters into your own hands to fix it.

I forgot about that one lol.
Then a confusing one is that the 101 is N/S, but through the SFV, it runs literally exactly E/W so if you don't know the geography of SoCal, it can be very confusing.
No worries. I find the interstate freeway system very interesting in its history and how it came about. I think we are going to need big thinking like this in the next few years to get out of the current mess.
