After visiting a good friend of mine in Louisville KY, I became curious about its location - Louisville is closer to the Gulf of Mexico at Pensacola Florida (616 miles) than it is to the Atlantic Ocean at Virginia Beach (669 miles)!! For Louisvillians seeking a summer retreat lol

Louisville is also 738 miles from Nags Head, NC yet only 655 miles from Myrtle Beach, SC (which is still further away than Pensacola Beach).

While this is true, the Hartford metro has about 500K people more than the entire state of South Dakota. It's just that Hartford proper isn't a big chunk of that.

The Twin Cities are the same way. Minneapolis itself is probably not a Top 50 city in the country, population wise, but the MSA is Top 15.

A few for the Seattle area:

The northern tip of West Seattle is farther north than I-90

Columbia City is as far east as Laurelhurst

Magnuson Park reaches farther east than part of Mercer Island

Discovery Park reaches as far west as downtown Tacoma

Of the 50 geographically-largest American islands, 37 are in Alaska, 6 in Hawaii, 2 in Michigan, and one each in New York, Puerto Rico, Texas, Guam, and Washington.
Long Island, NY, the 11’th largest, contains far more residents than all the other 49 islands combined.
For reference: Neither Manhattan nor Staten Island are among the 50 largest islands.

But everybody has always known that Nebraska has a big city, so it;s not an "Oddity of Geography".

Panama City in the Florida panhandle is directly south of Louisville though Louisville is in the Eastern Time Zone while almost all of the Florida panhandle is in the Central Time Zone. I imagine most younger kids that vacation in the Florida panhandle from Louisville during their childhood imagine themselves going southeast when going from Louisville to the panhandle despite the panhandle stretching farther west than Louisville because most people imagine Florida being southeast of Kentucky despite the westernmost point of Florida being further west than the easternmost point of Kentucky.
