Yes, trying to gauge the proximity of Knoxville to its recreation areas by looking at a map, is frustrating guesswork, at best. The consensus seems to be that it's not a distance that could be covered on foot, especially if one also anticipated working out in the recreation area, once they'd arrived and then returning home on foot, as well.

The portion of your post that I've highlighted in red, above, pretty much says it all. This is what I'm looking for.

I never realized this area is so beautiful! And the canal!....It looks like a river! I had read about it and even seen maps but somehow I had it pictured like one of our farming irrigation canals in the southwest, about the width of a small road with no shoulders.
