If you could move to what I call a destination small town in the Eastern US (preferably Southeast or Midwest), where would you choose? The parameters involve being a town where people come to get away, spend relax time and shop/indulge themselves a bit. A decent sized arts community would be desired and an active, thriving downtown is a must. I want to open a gift shop (art/crafts/etc) in a small town with a tradition for weekend/seasonal visitors. Some towns already on my radar are Saugatuck MI, Highlands NC and Blowing Rock NC. I would love to hear some feedback on some others. Thanks!

Do you have a population range in mind?

Probably 50K or less. I didn't mention but would also like a town where there is a significant presence of B&Bs/Inns, vacation homes and weekly rentals.

Thanks, it was a thought but am afraid it would be too remote for me, and too cold!

I hoped I would have liked Grand Haven when I visited last summer but found it paled in comparison to Saugatuck and neighboring Douglas (for me anyway). I think it was just lacking a bit with the "charm factor".

Does anyone here have firsthand experience with Galena, Illinois? I've heard some great things about it.

Does it have to be just in those regions or would a community that fits what you want in another region work?
