If I was in my 20's TODAY:
1) New York (for one year)
2) New Orleans (for one or two years)
3) Santa Cruz, CA (though I likely couldn't afford it)

If I could GO BACK to my 20's "way back then":
1) San Francisco (when it was an affordable city to live in, and more interesting)

The greater LA area. As a teen/college student, I was the typical "provincial" Southern Californian, thinking there was nowhere else, except a couple of European countries, that were worth a damn.

One never knows the work and family changes that come down the pike, so I no longer live there. Furthermore, attempts to move back have not worked out....so I'm thinking "you can't go home."

Well as someone in my 20s and graduating next year, I can tell you where I'd like to end up.

Here's my top 10, in no real order:

Albuquerque, NM
Dallas, TX
Louisville, KY
Columbia, SC
Raleigh, NC
Charleston, SC
Charlotte, NC
Memphis, TN
Mobile, AL
Austin, TX

P.S. I'm a new poster, but have been reading for a while. This forum has been outstandingly informative!

I turned 30 in 2010. In my 20s I lived abroad short term in a few places, but in the states lived in Chicago and San Francisco. I think they were good choices. I am thinking I will try something else though in my 30s, I'm thinking NYC or London, maybe even Sydney or Toronto. Not that Chicago is bad, but I'm still single and want to try something else, so why not. I'm looking to move in the next year. Not sure where else I would consider though, as I see a lot of places as a step down. I am thinking I'll finally have the income now to thoroughly enjoy somewhere like NYC or London though. I would consider Miami/LA if they got their infrastructure more together and I wouldn't be forced to buy a car, I hear they are good with singles in their 30s still living it up. I played it relatively safe in my 20s relationship wise... so now I don't really care any more and I'm looking to broaden my female horizons (dating a bunch of people). That may sound bad, but you would do the same thing too if you were in your 30s and not married with no kids, I never really had a crazy phase in my 20s or in college.
If I were in my 20s again, I would have mixed in a year or two somewhere like Boston or NYC. I definitely would have done Boston for college, kind of wish I did.
I think I've pretty much tapped out Chicago and SF though over the last decade.

Depends where I could get a job. Unless you have a LOT of money saved up, your career is going to be an important part of the decision. Assuming I could make a comfortable living in any of those places (funding retirement, saving to buy a house, still having the little extras), I'd go for the warmth. Hawaii would be the top (just for a few years), and then southern california (San Diego), or coastal North Carolina.

Unfortunately, none of those locations have job opportunities for my husband and I...so we've spent our entire 20's living in the suburbs of Washington DC, where we can comfortably afford to live.

either los angeles or palo alto. i could do austin and nashville too.

los angeles because of the entertainment. in my 20s and like to have some fun. i have family in palo alto and i really like it there. austin is fun for its size and as a jet skier lake travis would be awesome. nashville because of family and music.
