San Francisco. I love my urban cities and San Diego is kind of similar to LA.

preference is based on affordability, while SD is no longer cheap SF is unaffordable for many.

San Fran is awesome to visit, and if you're moving from NY gives you that same "city feelings" but to live, San Diego tops it. Both are expensive but the Bay in general is far more expensive than Southern California.
