Anyway, I left home at 17 to go to college (600 miles away). I go see my family at Christmas and for short visits, but I never again "lived" at home. I spent my college summers working in other cities.

Depends on the situation. If a person leaves for college, when they fill out paperwork more than likely they use their
home address which is most likely their parnets address or legal gaurdian etc. If they live in a dorm thats still not technically their residence.
But, some people leave home for college and might rent an apartment with some other students (sometimes the roomates might not even attend the same school). Live there over the summer and work. In this case (this is my opinion) they've pretty much moved out the house.
