We are going to be moving to an unfortunately ultra-high-property-tax area and are curious about what other people here on the CityData site are currently paying.

My poll has two kinds of questions: One, the range in which your annual property tax bill falls, and the other being whether or not your property tax bill includes school taxes. Apparantly every state is different in that regard. We are moving to New York, which is one of the states where school taxes are included in the total property tax bill (one reason why the taxes there are so very high). However I understand that some states (like Colorado) fund their schools from sources other than property taxes. So it would be interesting to see how many people here pay for their public schools via their property taxes.

(When voting, you can choose one tax-range answer category AND also one school tax answer category)

I am not sure if property taxes fund schools in New Mexico, but I don't think they do. I am one of the fortunate ones: my taxes are $1200 a year, that's on $193,000 assessed building + $20,000 assessed land.

However, the tax collectors get you somehow. Here in NM, we pay 7.5% sales tax, and the top income tax bracket is a mere $42000 annual, of which I qualify. There is no free lunch, in essence.

School taxes are included in our property taxes; it makes up about 65% of my tax bill. We are in the unincorporated part of the county, so our property taxes are $1666 for 2007. Our home's gross value is $187k but the assessed is around $75k.

Like mike0421 said, you get taxed in other areas even if your property taxes are relatively low (income taxes, sales tax, etc).

Ours are a little more than $4000 and include school taxes. I can't even imagine what a house like this would have been bled out in taxes in Florida.

That doesn't sound all that bad, really. The area we'll be moving to has sales tax of 8.62% (state and county combined)!
