well you've named states... I'm not sure what the top 5 are. I would think

1- Los Angeles
2- San Francisco
3- New York City
4- San Diego
5- Chicago... ?

I agree with 1-4, although I'd number them differently.

I don't think Chicago would be #5 - maybe Seattle or Boston? Not sure.

I found Chicago to be very affordable. I agree that my guess would be Boston or Seattle.

Washington, DC would definitely rank in the top five. It's a neat place, but the cost of living in this city is outrageous.
