I considered NYC and I can afford it but I don't want to spend that kind of money. I'd spend at least $2500-$3000/month for a place that I'd be happy with.
I still want to live in an urban area with nice entertainment. A city with at least 500,000 or more. Decent downtown and nic year around events.
I like lofts for my living space. Nearby water would be cool but not a must.
Where would you live? OR should I say, where could I live. I'm a single 38 y/0 male and I have no children.
Then maybe one of the following: Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, New Orleans, maybe mid-town Atlanta (no water though), maybe parts of Houston? (never been to check it out, but suspect there might be some suitable neighborhoods despite the city's suburban rep). You're going to make some big compromises one way or another with any of the cities in this group.
Washington, Boston, LA, and even Seattle and Portland, are good, but they're going to be quite expensive.
I'd probably pick Chicago or Philadelphia. Your lifestyle in these cities will pretty much be similar to your lifestyle in NY or SF. Seattle is great too, but it will definitely feel like a much smaller city compared to Chicago, SF, Philly, and especially NY.
LA, Boston, and DC are good choices, but they're pretty much just about as expensive as SF, and a little cheaper than NY.
Chicago. I've already done SF and NYC, and sadly I cannot afford them either.
Maybe I would consider Seattle, but Seattle/Philadelphia/DC just don't have the same big city feel.
Chicago's cultural offerings are incredible, and its free stuff outdoors in the summer can't be beat anywhere. You can live well here at your age, with your salary.
I do miss the weather and diversity of SF terribly, and NYC... well, you know.
