Another way of looking at the White Vote % would simply be as a function of how well the urban core is utilized. Whether in the form of college towns or hyper-dense citadels, urban cores that are utilized have higher white vote % than those that aren't.
So no surprise that Austin, Miami, and New Orleans, which really focused their cores as center of commerce, would have their counties with higher white vote % than those of Houston and Dallas, where the cores have seen greater time of neglect.

Despite decades of neglect and job sprawl, Downtown Dallas still has the highest concentration of jobs / job density in DFW. There's a large urban white population to the north of Downtown in the neighborhoods of Uptown & Oak Lawn. Around 50K residents live in the greater Downtown/Uptown area. Then there's majority-white East Dallas just to the east of Downtown. However, those areas may not be enough to offset suburban Highland Park/Far North Dallas and other parts of Dallas County as a % of white liberal voters.

Yeah, the offset is key. Although the ease of that, in all fairness, comes down to the geographic size of the county. Indeed, the counties/parishes where the white vote was won in Atlanta/New Orleans (respective) are all quite tiny.

Which makes it all the more impressive regarding Travis County. It's whiter than Dallas and Harris county (by %), yet still had a higher percent of hilary voters.

Though it falls into trends, since NH whites tend to have high ballot engagement rates. So as long as the difference in liberal NH whites was high enough between Travis and Dallas/Harris counties, the Hilary vote gap would be significant.
Indeed, Travis county had much higher voter turnout than the other two counties, to the point of even being a majority turn out. That shows a highly engaged and active Democratic base, a key part in why the county was impressive in that regard: https://www.texastribune.org/2016/11...nd-where-they/

It's the state capitol, so that's expected. It's never been "this makes Austin the best" or whatever. Each city has its differences, and Austin is just very politcal. Hilary did better in Austin than Dallas or Harris county, with or without the minority vote. Simple facts.
For me any negative thing I say about CA or TX is usually because somebody is overly positive about TX or CA. Or over reaching on CA or Texas. If you're from LA and you're talking up San Francisco, it's no different that DC to Boston. If you live in Houston you can't also be a Mavericks fan kind of thing.
