Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn are in Wayne county. Farmington Hills/Troy are in more affluent Oakland county.

Yes.

People do commute between the areas.

It would be more meaningful to show the same data purchasing power adjusted for cost of living in each area. Higher salary in a higher cost area may mean a lower living standard if adjusted for housing, taxes and other costs that vary significantly across the country.

Good point and actually the part of NY I'm in may come out pretty good in that regard. I found it interesting that average salary was on par with some major Southern metros like Charlotte and Richmond and higher than Nashville. Cost of living overall is roughly the same too.
