Hi,

I am a 42 year old woman. I currently live in south Florida but am not really happy here. I love Seattle, am from New England, but I can't live up north in the winters. I am looking for somewhere in the south that is liberal and progressive. I love nature and the outdoors. I love the ocean A LOT. It is difficult for me to live away from it. Coastal southern Cali seems like the logical choice, but it is very expensive and I'm not a big fan of the materialism of southern Cali. I've thought about Austin, TX because it seems to have a nice river and it is very green which is important to me.

I'm not sure what to do. Stay in Delray Beach, FL? Move to the Fl Keys? I want a big town. I love culture. Part of me wants to live in NYC, part of me wants to be in Seattle. But, for now, I am restricted to the south. Right now, Austin seems like the best choice. More affordable than CA, hip, progressive, pretty, lots of great music...

As a 42 year old I would worry about moving to a city where the average age is well below mine (Austin), particularly if dating and making friends is an interest. Have you considered Atlanta? Neighborhoods like Virginia-Highland, Decatur, East Atlanta and Druid Hills are as liberal as you'll find anywhere and in the midst of a major city with tons of outdoor recreational options (including the Chattahoochee River) and a relatively easy 4.5 hour drive to the beautiful beach at Tybee Island.

Austin is still Texas and I wouldn't say it's progressive at all. You're still subject to Texas laws, social policies, and limited by Texas's regressive tax structure. The Pacific NW in the SF, Portland, and Seattle areas are going to be the most "liberal".

Outside of a large gay community, South Florida is not "progressive" but I'm about to move from Miami to St. Pete. I love the vibe in st Pete and there's so much water in that area.

Perhaps seemingly from the outside looking in, but the reality is it's not quite the "oxymoron". There are quite a few liberal, progressive cities in the South...here are several examples:

Atlanta, GA
Athens, GA
Austin, TX
Nashville, TN
Asheville, NC
Durham, NC
Chapel Hill, NC
Carrboro, NC
Fort Lauderdale, FL
Miami, FL
West Palm Beach, FL
Gainesville, FL
Tallahassee, FL
Charlottesville, VA
Arlington, VA

I love South Florida and The South in general but have often wondered if there was a liberal progressive Southern city.

I'll have to keep an eye on this

If you're looking for a liberal/progressive state, move out of the South. If you're looking for a liberal/progressive city, kyle looks to have a good list. Note: a lot of those are college towns or cities.
